How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost? Planning Your First Campaign Budget

ChatGPT Ads costs depend on the auction, your campaign objective and how effectively your business turns traffic into customers. OpenAI currently lists a €15 minimum daily budget for EUR-billed accounts. This is a platform entry requirement, not a complete testing budget or an agency fee. Minimums differ by billing currency. OpenAI: campaign setup and minimum spend

The more useful business question is how much you can afford to acquire a suitable customer after allowing for the cost of delivering the product or service.

This guide explains how to move from a daily spending figure to a test with financial boundaries and clear decision rules. For account and campaign preparation, read our guide to your first ChatGPT Ads campaign.

What belongs in the budget?

Advertising spend is only one part of the investment. Separate the money paid to the platform from the work that makes that investment useful.

Cost category What it covers Question to answer
Media spend Spending inside the advertising platform What is the total test limit?
Preparation Offer, strategy and campaign structure Which business hypothesis are we testing?
Creative Copy, images and variations Which customer need and benefit do we explain?
Landing page and tracking Page improvements and measurement setup Will the intended action be recorded correctly?
Management Monitoring, analysis and optimization Who makes changes, based on which evidence?

An established ecommerce store with reliable tracking has different preparation needs from a business that requires a new landing page and CRM integration. Ask for a proposal that separates the deliverables, ongoing work and applicable taxes. There is no useful universal agency price without a defined scope.

CPC, CPM and customer acquisition cost

ChatGPT Ads supports billing for valid clicks or impressions. Conversion optimization does not mean paying only when a sale occurs. OpenAI: conversion-optimized campaigns

For planning, keep these definitions consistent:

  • CPC: media spend divided by clicks.
  • CPL: media spend divided by valid enquiries.
  • Media CAC: media spend divided by new customers attributed to the test.
  • Fully loaded CAC: the acquisition costs you choose to include divided by new customers, using a documented cost definition.

Do not compare one channel’s media CAC with another channel’s fully loaded CAC. Also check what a reported conversion represents. An enquiry, a first purchase and an existing customer’s repeat order have different commercial meanings.

Why identical click prices can produce different outcomes

The following is a hypothetical planning example, not a ChatGPT Ads benchmark or a GIM performance forecast. Both scenarios spend €1,000 at an average CPC of €2, producing 500 clicks. For this simplified model, each click represents a visit opportunity that can become an enquiry.

Measure Scenario A Scenario B
Media spend €1,000 €1,000
Clicks 500 500
Click-to-valid-enquiry rate 2% 4%
Valid enquiries 10 20
Enquiry-to-new-customer rate 20% 20%
New customers 2 4
Media CAC €500 €250

The CPC has not changed. The difference comes from converting interest into enquiries. In a real test, we would also examine lead quality, sales timing and attribution before crediting the entire improvement to a page change.

How daily budgets translate into spending limits

OpenAI treats daily budget as an average. With an unchanged setting, limits are 2× in one day and 7× within the Sunday–Saturday budget week, using the account’s time zone. Budget changes affect those limits. OpenAI: Daily Budgets

Unchanged daily budget Maximum for one day Full-week limit
€15 €30 €105
€30 €60 €210
€50 €100 €350

These are media spending limits, not a promise of delivery. Account-specific bid constraints may require a higher minimum. If your priority is a defined overall spending ceiling, examine the campaign-total budget option where supported.

How much should your first test receive?

Start with an acquisition cost your business can support. Then consider how much useful evidence the available budget can realistically produce.

In another hypothetical example, a new customer contributes €600 after variable fulfilment costs and before marketing and fixed overhead. The business chooses a €180 media CAC ceiling. If 20% of valid enquiries become customers, the corresponding media CPL ceiling is €36: €180 multiplied by 20%.

This is an internal planning limit. It does not predict what the platform will achieve. Creative, management costs, unsuccessful sales work and cash-flow timing still need separate consideration.

Before launch, document:

  1. The offer and market being tested.
  2. The total affordable commitment, including preparation.
  3. What qualifies as a valid enquiry or completed order.
  4. How long a customer normally takes to buy.
  5. What evidence would justify continuing, changing or stopping the test.

Stopping before sales mature can understate performance. Continuing with broken tracking can consume the budget without answering a useful question. Neither problem is solved by choosing a more impressive daily spending figure.

How GIM would assess a budget increase

GIM’s BCR² methodology connects research, acquisition, conversion and customer retention. Applied to budget planning, it means preparing a commercial brief: offer, contribution margin, buying journey, measurement and investment criteria.

If enquiries are unsuitable, we would examine the promise and offer. If suitable prospects do not close, we would also review sales follow-up. If customers arrive at an acceptable total acquisition cost, we would assess a measured expansion and its additional results.

This keeps the conversation focused on the business constraint. Sometimes the next useful investment is improved product information or faster enquiry handling. Sometimes it is additional media. The evidence should determine which comes first.

Frequently asked questions

Is €15 per day enough?

It is the published minimum for EUR billing, subject to any further account constraints. Whether it supports a useful test depends on traffic cost, conversion frequency and the sales cycle. Businesses using other billing currencies should check their own minimum.

What is a good CPC?

A click price that produces suitable customers at an acceptable acquisition cost. Cheap traffic has little value when visitors cannot use the offer or do not become customers.

When should we increase spending?

When tracking is reliable, outcomes have had time to mature and the additional investment has a credible financial basis. There is no single percentage increase that suits every business.
